Sclerotherapy is a technique that is used to treat spider veins (red starburst-like vessels) and larger blue veins mainly on the leg but sometimes on the face.
The technique of Sclerotherapy involves introducing a tiny needle into the vein and injecting a small amount of liquid known as sclerosant. This sclerosant irritates the vein wall and if pressure is applied, in the form of support stockings, the vein will close over and gradually disappear.
Consultation
As with UGS an initial consultation will be organised with our doctors to assess your veins and determine whether you require UGS prior to standard sclerotherapy. Number and cost of these sessions will then be discussed (some sclerotherapy attracts a Medicare rebate).
Sclerotherapy has been practiced for many years and is still the most effective way of removing leg veins. Although some complications can occur these are usually minor or very rare (you will be given more detailed information prior to your treatment session).
Treatment sessions usually last 30-40 minutes and are generally associated with minor discomfort. Stockings are usually worn for 6 days following treatment. No time off work is necessary and usual activities can be resumed immediately.
