Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy (UGS)

Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy or UGS is a relatively new technique for the treatment of large varicose veins that, in the past, required a stripping operation to treat.

These veins occur because of incompetence of the major 'Saphenous' veins of the leg. Ordinary Sclerotherapy will not help this condition.

UGS has been practiced world-wide for ten years and in Australia, by a handful of practitioners, for about five years. It is now being offered in South Australia at Cosmetech by Dr. Emma Nolan

Dr.Nolan has been specifically trained in this technique and is a member of The Australian Society of Sclerotherapy and The Cosmetic Physicians Society of Australia.

UGS is a 'walk in walk out' procedure.

Following an initial consultation involving an examination, photographs of the leg and an ultrasound scan, suitability for UGS is discussed and a treatment session booked.

Treatment sessions last approx. 30 mins. per leg and involve a number of small injections into the veins under ultrasound guidance.

Stockings are worn for 2 weeks following the procedure, no time off work is required.

We review you and re-scan at the 2 week interval, occasionally a small second treatment may be required.

UGS is an ideal alternative to surgical stripping of varicose veins for those who cannot have or don't want a general anaesthetic, have had a recurrence following surgery, cannot afford the costs associated with surgery and hospitalisation, or don't want to take time off work.

The risks and outcomes of UGS will be discussed with you prior to treatment.

Existing data, to date, suggests that UGS treatment success rates appear to be about equal to surgery with a significantly lower rate of complications.
